Hello there! Are you a freshman heading off to college this year or in the near future? First, let me congratulate you on taking the first step to a prosperous future. Now, I want to share with you a few Freshman Year Necessities and Organization Tips. These tips will help you to stay organized and have the necessities of your dorm room to survive your first year of college.
Going off to college is such a major transition in one’s life. One minute you’re living at home with your family. All of the sudden you’re basically living on your own away from home. No one is there to clean up after you, to feed you or do your laundry. Welcome to adulthood! While you’re adjusting and transitioning into adulthood, it is very important to stay organized. Staying organized helps you to keep things in order and in its proper place. It is very important to stay organized while in college because you are going to have a lot on your plate. You’re going to have classes pertaining to different subjects. More than likely, you’re going to (hopefully you will) be involved in extracurricular activities and/or sports. Being an active college student is a job within itself so it is very crucial to learn the importance of prioritizing and organizing.
Here are a few necessities that you will need in order to stay organized:
- Storage Bins. I’m sure you’re going to bring a lot of things from home to school. Unfortunately, most freshman dorm rooms aren’t that big. You want to make sure that you have as much space to avoid unnecessary clutter. Storage bins like this one HERE as well as this ONE will allow you to store your items and put them away under the bed or closet.
- Desk Organizer. I wish I would’ve had one of these my Freshman Year. I did get one my Junior Year when I was super active on campus. Let’s just say that this is a lifesaver! I’m sure you’re going to work from your desk a lot. It’s good to have something there to sort out your work, upcoming events and programs and etc. This three-piece organizer HERE will keep everything in order such as your writing utensils, folders and more. A mounted board like THIS will do if you don’t want too many items on your desk. I highly recommend it and it will make your busy life a little bit calmer.
- Desk Lamp. There are going to be nights when you are going to have to pull all-nighters. They are not fun but the work must get done! You don’t want to wake up or disturb your roommate (if you have one). Having a desk lamp will help you to see at night to get your work done. It is close to you so that it is not disturbing to others in your room. A desk lamp like this HERE is perfect for night owl students, and to stay organized as well!
- Sheets and Bedding. This is a major necessity in my opinion. You do not want to lay on a bare mattress in a dorm room. Those mattresses are probably cold and uncomfortable without any sheets. Always go with a bedding set like THIS that comes with everything (pillowcases, comforter, sham and etc.) You want to make sure that you are comfortable at night so that you are able to get a good nights rest.
- Dorm Decor. Your dorm is your home away from home! It is only right to decorate as such! You don’t have to go overboard and make it HGTV like. But make it so that it feels like you’re right at home even though you are not. An accent rug, floor-length curtains, television, and pictures of your family in frames will give you that extra life in your dorm. There are so many ways to decorate to feel at home and Wayfair.com has everything that you need to get it done!
Another necessity to have is a planner. Most schools give out one every year to write down your assignments and as well as staying in the know of upcoming activities on campus. You are more than welcome to use those but if you would like to get your own, it is a must! You don’t want to forget any assignments or upcoming events now do you?! 😉
Your college experience is what you make it. You do not get those years back! I repeat you DO NOT get those years back. Please make sure you enjoy it to the fullest, participate in campus activities, and stay on top of everything by prioritizing what’s important and staying organized! Cheers to your college years!
